Meh...maybe if you're short on time.

Honestly, I wouldn't buy it again or suggest that anyone buy this. While it does get the main points across, it could have been a bit more in-depth; only took about 5 minutes to read all of it. The spelling and grammatical errors didn't help, either. But, if you have some kind of test on it, and only have 5 or 10 minutes to prepare, then maybe the couple bucks would be worth it.

The plays themselves are fine, but my ability to navigate around the book is limited by using my phone. I wish I could easily get to a table of content that told me the lengths of the plays so I could determine if they met my group's needs.

My husband and I are amateur improvisers, and we are going on an old-fashioned driving vacation soon. We will use this book to practice our improv. While one of us is driving, the other will pick a character in one of the plays and read a line to the one that's driving. The driver must improvise a response to the line, and then the passenger will read the next line for his character, and so on to have lots of fun and keep alert while driving on long stretches of interstate.

About the Author
Nancy Frey, Ph.D., a Professor at San Diego State University received the 2008 Early Career Achievement Award from the National Reading Conference. Dr. Frey has published in The Reading Teacher, English Journal, Remedial and Special Education, and Educational Leadership. She has co-authored more than fifty books on English Learners (Language Learners in the English Classroom), assessment (Checking for Understanding), writing (Scaffolded Writing Instruction), literacy (Reading for Information in Elementary School) and vocabulary (Learning Words Inside and Out). Dr. Frey teaches a variety of courses on reading instruction and literacy in content areas, classroom management, and supporting students with diverse learning needs. She also was a third grade classroom teacher.

Great read for anyone who is serious about creating objectives and purpose for lessons

Right at the beginning of the book, Fisher and Frey differentiate between a lesson objective (which is in the mind of the teacher) and the lesson purpose, which is the act of carefully communicating the objective to students. They address the SMART criteria for objectives and even touch on how inquiry-based lessons fit in. I love that they talk about how backwards planning (a la my beloved Understanding by Design) makes establishing purpose easier, and even how purpose works with theme-based instruction. Fisher and Frey explain that students who reflect on their purpose for learning understand and retain material better, and approach their work with more creativity and critical thinking skills.

This is a fantastic book for any teacher who is serious about creating objectives and purpose for lessons. The Purposeful Classroom is no easy beach read due to the subject matter, but it's written in a straight-forward, relevant way that addresses the major trends right now in education and ties them all back to creating meaning and purpose for students. Fisher and Frey explain in very simple terms how to write objectives that include both content and language components, and how those objectives fit with pacing guides.They even use the buzz-word du jour "unpacking the standards" in a surprisingly meaningful way.

I especially like the chapters on ensuring that a lesson's purpose is relevant and inviting students to own the purpose. They discuss intrinsic vs. extrisic motivation as well as fixed versus growth mindsets, teaching kids how to set their own goals, and using "I Can" statements. The book concludes with a discussion of assessment: identifying outcomes related to the purpose and knowing when a learning target has been met (which is not as easy as it seems; sometimes we think the class understands a concept when most kids have actually just muddled through it.)

Dark Book

If you allow it, this book will effect your mood. The story ties in actual events that took place at Columbine High with the actual people, places and evidence tied into a fictional account of the narrator/author's account of things happining in his life before,during and the most compelling, dark period, after the columbine murders and it's affect it takes on himself and his wife and the world around him. This is truly dark stuff, because you KNOW that someone, somewhere is experiencing exactly what your reading in this book.

If the general story doesn't sound interesting enough for a 750+ page hardcover book, don't worry, the story will not allow you to put the book down as the pages fly by. I have had the book for 3 days and have finished it and didn't once feel like I was reading a (big) book.

Great book, but beware. The author touches on alot of personal subjects that cover depression, anxiety, sexual abuse, murder, adultery, and a host of others that can and will carry with you after you put the book down.

Gritty, confident, witty, and direct

The story begins with the Columbine School Massacre, having followed the seemingly innocent culprits before the event. It then goes into fiction centred on the two main characters, husband and wife, and how they are affected, along with glimpses into their family's past. It all makes for an epic journey.

I must admit had difficulty finishing this book, the reason? Quite simply I did not like the character who was the narrator. The narrator, Caelum Quirk, is an educated man, a teacher, but he has among other failings anger management problems, a wife who was once unfaithful, and they both are prone to using unsavoury language. To follow them through their traumatic experiences was at time almost a burden. For me it is important to feel something for the main characters in a story, to care about them, but here I was unable to connect.

Maybe the fault is mine. The book is extremely well written and reads with great ease. It is gritty, confident, witty, and direct; putting aside my reservations it would make very involving and rewarding reading. But if I am going to become involved in a story it is essential that I am able to feel something of the main characters; I do not expect them to be perfect, but I need to be able warm to them, to care about them, and here I could not.

Love Wally Lamb - very disapointed

I consider Wally Lamb to be one of the most personally influential authors I have ever read. I have waited in anticipation for this book to be released. He lacks in areas I normally site as his strength - character development. Usually Lamb has the power to pull you into the body of the character and feel their emotions with them however in this work, I merely felt that he used side stories to distract from the fact that none of them had depth. Maureen, 'Mo' is the character I found the most appealing, but because the story is written from her husbands point of view, her deep tragedy goes without any sort of lasting impact on the reader. Lamb claims to have chosen events & people that occurred over the past 8 years to draw inspiration from and give them everlasting tributes through their impact in his characters lives. But all he manages to achieve is a listless and unconvincing review of the events of the stories we still see day to day on the 6 o'clock news. His closing remarks reveal that he struggled with writing this book, and I believe the pressure got to him... he wasn't true to himself in this work. Such a shame.

A Man, A Jersey and a Tight End by A.M. Riley

The sequel of Goldilocks and His Three Bears is a very long one, and it's like two books in one. In the first part Brian (alias Goldilocks) learns how to settle in this new relationship of him: Paul (alias Daddy Bear) is again far from hom for works, six months of leave and Brian, who is studying at College, can't have the chance to be with him. So he is at home with Jim (alias Momma Bear), who also he is far from his beloved, Scott (alias Teddy Bear), travelling with his truck in the north. Brian behaves badly to call attention to him and Jim is not sure to be the one to properly castigate him. On the other hand Scott is sulking, believing that he is not an important piece in the puzzle of their relationship, and so also him behaves very badly. Paul with Brian, and Jim with Scott will have to tight the leash on this two bottom brats.

In the second part of the book, Scott takes home Joshua, like a child could take home a stray dog. Joshua is a young and frightened guy, needing a master figure in his life. But Paul and Jim are not the right person to do that, they have their plate full with their two brats. Luckily Paul meets an old friend, Freddie, a top without a domestic relationship in this moment.

As the previous one, this book is a funny romp: there is a lot of sex, but it's always a very relaxing and funny type of sex; even when it arrives to some pretty kinky and heavy erotic stuff, the description is always more light and funny, than angst. I'm not against some kinky stuff, here and there, but sometime, reading certain books, it's like reading an "how to do" books, full of clinical details that risk to ruin all the romanticism of the story. In this case, A.M. Riley gives us all the necessary inputs to understand what it's happening, but doesn't indulge in the description, preferring a light tone.

Of all the characters, the lion share is taken by the bottoms. Brian, as in the previous book, has a very prominently role in the first part of the book, and instead Scott, who really didn't shine before, in the second part of the book is the incontrastated hero. Seeing the two brats conspiring and involving also Joshua in their plans, allows the reader to fully understand who are the real puppeteers in this strange multipartner relationship.

Four men together make a happy home, but what happens when a stray is brought into the mix? Brian and his three bears have somehow made it work all living and loving together. But with Scott and Paul on the road a lot for work, Brian and Jim are left to try to keep everything together. When Scott brings home a lost twink, some of the relationships begin to change. Can this foursome keep it together or is there room to grow?

A Man, A Jersey, and a Tight-End is the sequel to Goldilocks and His Three Bears. I'd highly suggest reading the first book before tackling this sequel as the relationships are established in the first book and this one is actually much deeper and more meaningful. In Goldilocks, the two main couples are established - Paul and Brian, Jim and Scott - while the foursome regularly mix it up and have an open policy for everyone, especially Brian. Now those relationships are tested with real life. This story focuses more on the emotional bonds and how to make such unorthodox couplings really work. It still has the same light, playful touch to the sex scenes but the characters feel deeper and more real this time around.

Also the issues brought up are more intense. Not all of these issues are well handled. Most are glossed over very easily and quickly, more for the plot point of the issue than the actual resolution. The story does try to bring up more in depth issues than the last book. Additionally there are numerous sex scenes, enough to please any fan. There are almost too many but as always Ms. Riley is an excellent writer so this isn't a bad thing. If anything it keeps the tone playful and light with a lot of rough-housing and enjoyable banter.

This is a pretty successful and entertaining sequel, though it's not perfect. It would have been nice to see some of these issues really addressed but overall the solid writing and fun characters make for a good story. If you've read the first book, definitely pick this one up and if you're new to the series start now, it's worth your time.

Paul, aka Brian's "Daddy", has been away on business, leaving Jim, the mama bear, in charge of the brat. Over the time Paul has been away Brian has had some issues crop up that he is not sharing with anyone and it is causing some ripples in the relationships between himself and Paul, and also between himself and Jim.

Scott is an over the road truck driver and due back shortly after Paul leaves. Meanwhile, that leaves Jim without his two friends and alone to deal with Brian's antics. Only before Scott makes it home he finds himself in a bit of trouble with the law.

Things just seem to be evening out when Scott comes home from a run with a cowboy, Joshua, in tow. To top it off, Paul brings a friend also, Fredrick, to stay while he searches for his own home. When Fredrick meets Joshua it is lust at first sight. But it is going to take a bit of patience on Fredrick's behalf to overcome some past emotional trauma Joshua has experienced if he wants the gorgeous cowboy for himself.

Kudos to AM Riley for writing an incredible tale with three couples, especially with four of the six mixing it up together occasionally. If you read Goldilocks and His Three Bears you see definite growth in the men's relationships. The antics Brian and Scott pull and the way their two tops respond occasionally was hilarious and not what your mind may think a Dom would do. A Man, A Jersey and a Tight End encompasses a lot from drama, comedy, love, playing matchmaker, getting punished for playing matchmaker and sex so hot I was surprised the pages didn't catch aflame. I loved A Man, A Jersey and a Tight End and would love to see more with these men.
