Born in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1830, Dickinson began life as an energetic, outgoing young woman who excelled as a student. However, in her mid-twenties she began to grow reclusive, and eventually she rarely descended from her room in her father’s house. She spent most of her time working on her poetry, largely without encouragement or real interest from her family and peers, and died at age fifty-five. Only a handful of her 1,775 poems had been published during her lifetime. When her poems finally appeared after her death, readers immediately recognized an artist whose immense depth and stylistic complexities would one day make her the most widely recognized female poet to write in the English language.
Dickinson’s poetry is remarkable for its tightly controlled emotional and intellectual energy. The longest poem covers less than two pages. Yet in theme and tone her writing reaches for the sublime as it charts the landscape of the human soul. A true innovator, Dickinson experimented freely with conventional rhythm and meter, and often used dashes, off rhymes, and unusual metaphors—techniques that strongly influenced modern poetry. Dickinson’s idiosyncratic style, along with her deep resonance of thought and her observations about life and death, love and nature, and solitude and society, have firmly established her as one of America’s true poetic geniuses.

I wanted a copy of the collected works to put on my phone. I was quite surprised to see this edition, with the exact same cover as my hardcover book.
My copy came out before the writer of this introduction received her PhD in 1999. George Gesner wrote the introduction to my copy, which I think was published around 1982 by Crown Publishers.
While this e-copy has an updated introduction, it lacks the small illustrations found on numerous pages, doesn't have printed bar divisions between poems that share pages, but the actual original layout of the poetry is the same. The poetry is broken into books, (called Parts in the e-edition), with each poem numbered in Roman numerals. The order of the poems has not been changed.
I agree with the reviewer who complained about the layout on her iPad, but it isn't as bad as it sounds. The first word is all caps because the original, of which this is a copy, was printed that way. The font is not original and the layout is too close to the left margin, but doesn't interfere with the ability read. I would imagine everyone will have to adjust the layout and font/size to suit their own personal preferences. I almost have the impression that the publisher tried to modernize the hard copy that was used for this ebook, but did a sloppy job formatting it to Kindle.
That said, FOR THE PRICE, this is a good copy. The table of contents is interactive, but you don't have any indication of what numbers correspond to which poem. The footnotes are interactive.
I honestly recommend only using any of the available e-books as a backup for paper copies. I have yet to find an ebook that is formatted well enough to stand on its own. Which is a shame.

Another awful transfer

Unreadable dreck on kindle for iPad. How many ways can Amazon continue to defraud Kindle buyers?
In this instantiation of the old fraud, the publishers decided to capitalize the first word of each poem. Not small caps, mind you, which arguably would be readable, but just all caps!
Are there any decent Dickinson editions for Kindle? The ones I tried don't work, at least on the iPad.

Emily Dickinson doesn't need me, I need her...we all do. Any serious reader already knows of her genius in condensation of symbol. She never said more than that which was necessary, and she said all that was necessary.
This is a fine annotated collection. Though I have it in print, I could not bare the thought of leaving her behind when I travel. Thus the KINDLE version.
