Huldufòlk, "The Hidden People" on a Killing Spree?

Oh, no. Not them!
The culprit is - as we will learn in this very entertaining short story written by Michael Ridpath - Edge of Nowhere, 66 North: Fire & Ice Book II (Fire and Ice) and Meltwater - a person, that is perfectly visible to everyone...
Magnus Jonson, Icelander by birth, American Cop by education, has returned to his roots to serve in the Reykjavik Police. But this case takes him to the very Edge of Nowhere - into the North West Fjords to an incident that has all the requisites to become a murder investigation. The dead man wasn't a very nice person, had enemies and a recent murder threat.
But the locals - spearhaeded by a wannabe-"Seer" - are sure that here were the Huldufòlk, The Invisibles at work, revenging the construction of a tunnel on their claimed grounds...
But - like always - there will be a much more "human" solution of the case...
The story is well woven, the acting persons are well designed and the situation, the beliefs and the atmosphere of this godforsaken region of Iceland's North-West gives a lot of insight You only gain by experience.
I enjoyed this story very much, for lovers and friends of Iceland an absolute Must-Read.

Another great piece of Icelandic fiction by Michael Ridpath

This is a thrilling short story involving murder, superstition, and a host of complicated characters set in Iceland's desolate west fjords. Magnus Jonson, an Iceland born, Boston-raised detective is sent to the west fjords to solve a possible murder. Magnus was the central character in two previous Ridpath novels,"Where the Shadows Lie" and "66 Degrees North". I enjoyed Ridpath's ability to incorporate Iceland's landscape, history and folklore into a cohesive story. The characters are an intriguing lot and an unexpected twist makes this a great read. Presently there are several popular Icelandic crime writers. The fact that British born Ridpath is able to write so convincingly about Iceland and its people is impressive. I would highly recommend "Edge of Nowhere" to anyone who enjoys Nordic crime fiction.

A VERY short story!

Beware, this is a VERY short story indeed ... the book equivalent of about 30 pages! For the price of half a Kindle book I would have expected a little more than that.
It's a shame, because I really liked Ridpath's first two novels of the Fire & Ice series. The story itself is ok I guess, considering there are only 30 or so pages to tell it. Ridpath is (surprisingly, since he's an Englishman) much better in describing the bleak Icelandic landscape than most of the currently popular Icelanders (eg. Arnaldur or Yrsa). But again, given its brevity, there's little to be found of that in this "book".
As a desperate Icelandophile I just hope that future instalments of the author's Fire & Ice series are a little more satisfying.
