Parents of Children with Disabilities: A Survival Guide for Fathers & Mothers is one of Liberty University Press best-selling books. This book from an experienced father and mother who have been there, done that straight shooting, parent-to-parent, and is punctuated with carefully crafted, hard-hitting stories to increase interest. There are over 30 illustrations/cartoons to help the visual learner and to support key points. The length of the book is relatively short so that busy parents (especially fathers) will be more likely to read the book. Each chapter has a specific theme and each chapter ends with three or four, take-a-ways.
Three chapters are actual life stories by families that have learned and grown from the experience of having a child with significant disabilities. The first story is about a family with a daughter who experienced trauma at birth that left her severely impaired; the second story is about a family with an son who has autism; and the third story is about a family whose 14-year old son almost died from a brain aneurism at age 12 and currently is struggling with both physical and learning disabilities.

an easy read...
By RDB
For any given topic, there are books geared towards academicians, researchers, and the avid as well as the occasional reader. The topic, parents of children with disabilities, had significant appeal to me not because I fit into any of the aforementioned categories but simply because I have a nephew with a disability and I've witnessed the struggles among parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles and other relations, including classmates as they tried to relate to a child who did not 'fit' what most of us have come to categorize as a 'normal', and well adjusted child. The book was a 'find' for me and my family and I wish to thank the Barnhills for their fresh approach. I believe that regardless of the reference for the reader, each individual will gain something unique that will inspire, bring comfort, enlighten and enrich the relationships that are shared with children with disabilities as well as the parents of children with disabilities. I've often said, whenever I discuss the contents of the book, that it was an 'easy' read. The reality is that those of us who have tried to rationalize our experiences with children with disabilities will gain new insight and knowledge that will strengthen our spirits as well as the children's...

Very Helpful Book for Parents
By Laura Spring
This book is an easy to read book for parents who are entering into the world of having a child with a disability or for those who are struggling with being a parent of one. Most books try to center around the issues of the child, this book does a wonderful job of describing the challenges that parents go through as parents of a special needs child an our differnt roles within the family. A few months ago our son was diagnosed with Autism. We have experienced much of what this book describes. This book does not try to go into any direct help for your child, as there are so many different types of disabilities and different type of children that it would take volumes to cover that. Instead this book goes into being the best parent and member of the family that we can be. We have always seen our son as the blessing that he is, but this book may help others realize that about their own children. There are several biblical references in supporting what they have written. This is not a Christian book pushing religion, but rather a common sense guide on how to deal with life, from the unique perspective of two parents who have lived and struggled through it themselves. It brings age old wisdom, modern psychology, real life perspectives and experiences. This book is well worth your time reading.

If you know a struggling parent who has a child with disabilities this book would be a perfect gift for them. We; parents, often don't have the time to search for or the luck to find books like this that can really help us in our special situation. I'm so thankful that a friend of mine recommended it to me and I took the time to read it.

Parent Support Group
By Shelley Davidson
This book has been such a blessing to our Parent Support Group at our church. We hand this book out to every parent who attends the group. It is very well written and is Biblically-based. Parents are seeking books that offer support and encouragement as they raise children with Special Needs. This book is a must read for all parents and families. Press and Gina Barnhill gather from their previous experience as Support Group leaders as well as thier experiences as parents raising a son with Autism. I would highly recommend this book.
