The real deal

Everyone thinks they want to know what Himalayan mountaineering is like, but what they really want to know, is what Himayalan mountaineering would be like if they were to try it. Horrell paints a strange picture of mountaineering purgatory: endless days of playing cards and reading Tom Clancy waiting for a weather window in order to climb the mountain. Along with ever-present boredom and the delinquent antics of colleagues, other hazards of of the high-altitude environment include stolen gear, diarrhea and a frostbitten penis. And God help you if you get caught throwing your garbage down a crevasse in front of the environmentalist team member who wants to bring an inflatable earth beach ball to the summit! This is not a glamorous account of the life of an elite mountaineer, but an honest account of a self-described "walker" who climbs mountains not for the technical challenge, but to get to the top and have a look around. This book provides a view of guided expedition mountaineering that is at once subtle and unexpected. The content of this book is not as enticing as the perspective and dry wit of its British, author. The author imparts a sense of humility rather than superiority that comes across to the reader, as well as a keen appreciation for the absurd. Rarely would I encourage anyone to publish their diaries. Mr. Horrell is a notable exception.

Entertaining, with a different view point

I'm sure I've read dozens and dozens of standard climbing stories of the years, and generally find them very enjoyable. This takes the climbing story from a different angle. We've all heard the stories of the huge, guided climbing groups in the Himalayas and other "important" ranges. This is the story of trecking and climbing with one of those groups. Actually, there isn't much climbing going on. Mostly walking and waiting at camp for a weather break. Surprisingly the author manages to make this and entertaining enough read that I've since read two other of his books.
If you want high adventure and adrenalin, wrong book. If you just love reading about the mountains, and getting a little insight into human relations, this is a very good book.

A way you'll (most of us, anyway) never be.

I'm a walker and a Sunday hiker, but I'll never get to K2. However, the next best thing is experiencing these mountaineering diaries. Really well done. I've got to pay attention on the train or I'll miss my stop when I'm reading this. I especially appreciate his daily reporting of life on a mountain trek, without all the tiresome lyrical philosophyzing. I mean, I don't need someone - and you don't either - telling us all about the "ethereal and sublime" experience of being on a mountain. Just tell us what you see and hear, and well supply the rest. This guy gets it, and I, for one, am grateful.
