The Treading Water Series, Book 2
“Marking Time” continues the story begun in “Treading Water” as Clare Harrington begins a new life. She’s considered a miracle, but everything that’s happened since she recovered from a three-year coma has been something less than miraculous. Now left to grapple with the aftermath of a selfless decision, she is home from the hospital and trying to figure out what the next chapter in her miraculous recovery has in store for her. Meanwhile, her eighteen-year-old daughter Kate, a talented singer and songwriter, sets out to pursue her musical dreams in Nashville. Her parents have agreed to allow Kate to spend a year there, but they couldn't have anticipated Kate falling in love with a much older man. Her newly divorced parents are forced back together to confront their wayward daughter. Spanning from Newport, Rhode Island, to Nashville, Tennessee, to Stowe, Vermont, "Marking Time" is the story of new beginnings and new loves.
Of "Treading Water," reviewers said:
"Treading Water is a definite must read! Treading Water creates an emotional firestorm within the reader. It shines the light on the good and the bad in life and proves that one moment can change everything and it’s never too late to find love. Marie Force grabbed my heart and squeezed every ounce of emotion out of it but most importantly her monumental story left me blissful. Treading Water may be fiction but it gives me hope; hope in everyday people and happily ever after. I cannot wait for the next book in this trilogy, Marking Time." —Joyfully Reviewed, a "Recommended Read" for November!
"This isn't your typical romance where you're positive you're going to get the happy ending you were hoping for at the beginning. It will rip your heart out at times and having you weeping for joy at others. A stunning story about learning to love again and learning when to let go to those you love." —Night Owl Reviews, Reviewer Top Pick

Disappointed....
By Ann
First time to give a Marie Force bk less than 4-5 stars. Pulled me in right from the beginning, even had me in tears a time or two, read it in a day. Loved the Clare/Aiden story. Happy for Clare's HEA after all she'd been through. Didn't care for the creepy Kate/Reid story. Would have loved Reid for Clare, or Ashton for Kate. Couldn't get past virgin Kate having just turned 18 having instant sex/love with someone her father's age (definite need for some in depth counseling there!). You knew it would end badly from the get go. The 46 yr old Reid's first step into a romantic relationship being a longtime widower and he jumps straight in to instant love with an 18 year old? No way. Also bothered me a bit that all the characters here with a romantic story are in love at a glance, same as in Treading Water. Felt like I was reading a Lifetime movie with only a 2 hour time slot to get the story wrapped up quick.
The Aidan/Maggie dialogue about her being an adult 13 year old was too funny and adorably sweet. Aiden's family was a hoot and I look forward to more of them in Brandon's story. Didn't care for Clare and the adoption portion of the story either, like there aren't enough kids in this blended family already? Felt like Clare was trying to compete with Jack/Andi and it would've been a much better HEA to just leave Clare and Aiden to go riding off into the hot, sweaty, sexy sunset.
Sad that Reid doesn't get his HEA and he certainly deserved one with someone more his own age. Maybe he should move to Gansett Island and try his luck at romance there.

A mixed reaction- loved parts, but hated others
By Anonymous
(mild spoilers) Let me first say that I love Marie Force books. I've read them all and thoroughly enjoy them. I had mixed feelings about Marking Time, however. While I loved Clare's second chance story, I was disturbed by Kate's story. I appreciate that it was not traditional, but frankly I was disgusted. I felt like I was reading "love scenes" that felt more like statutory rape. Yeah, Kate was legal by like a month, but does that really make a big difference? It didn't to me. I kept imagining if her birthday fell during her senior year and she was screwing her 45 year old math teacher or something. I thought it was just gross. Moreover, I think the Reid character was rather undeveloped. Are we supposed to forgive him because he's lonely and he has reservations about the whole thing initially? If you are a good person, you don't take advantage of your friend's 18 year old daughter who has survived a horrible tragedy. You just don't. I wish I could have had this book without what to me felt like an unnecessary, cringe-worthy B-story. But other than that, I really liked it. I love how Marie Force writes. She is one of my favorites for sure.

Another vote for loved parts and hated parts
By Kindle Customer
That Clare found the strength to make lemonade after life handed her lemons is a truly inspiring story. However, the whole Kate/Reid thing was pretty much repulsive and (fortunately) unbelievable enough for me to continue reading. Fathers of girls who attach themselves to father figures are either weak or missing. Jack was neither and I just couldn't buy it. Another gripe is Ms. Force's seeming preoccupation with economic class snobbery. Comparing millions....really? And the carpenter who's conveniently a Yale-educated MD so, heaven forbid, Clare wouldn't be marrying beneath her station.
Believe it or not, I CAN "suspend disbelief" but this one just worked on my nerves. Sorry. Still, I liked the O'Malley clan and Brandon offers "get real" potential for the final book in this series. I won't hesitate to buy it.
